The success of Deputy Geoff Southern’s proposition, which was adopted by 36 votes to one by the Assembly, means that the old age pension will increase to £189.84 per week early next year.

Pensioners will also receive a backdated payment, worth £2.59 per week, to cover the period from October until the new rate comes into force to ensure that claimants do not lose out.

And there was more good news for pensioners, who during the past three years have seen their payments go up by less than inflation.

Social Security Minister Francis Le Gresley revealed during the debate that he would be bringing proposals to the House in the new year for a new system to increase pensions more effectively in the future.
