With duty on alcohol set to rise by up to 10% at the start of next year under proposals in the Budget, a late challenge has been made to keep the increases below the rate of inflation.
St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft has tabled an amendment that would overturn £1m worth of duty rises, and reduce the increases to 2.5%.
And Deputy Gerard Baudains is challenging a three-pence-per-litre duty rise on fuel, saying that motorists are already paying £20 million per year in fuel duty. He says that the 6.9% increase that ministers want, in order to raise £1.4m, is a step too far.
