Hurricane Sandy made landfall along the New Jersey coast at around midnight UK time bringing with it gusts of more than 85mph and record breaking surges of sea water in New York where subway tunnels flooded, roads were blocked with fallen trees and debris and millions of people were left without power.

Yesterday those in the path of the deadly hurricane had spent the day preparing, including a number of people from Jersey currently living or travelling in the US.

They included former Jersey College for Girls student and reigning Miss St Clement Gigi Neil (18) who has lived in New York for eight weeks after moving there to study acting, theatre and film at the Michael Howard Studios.
