As reported in the Jersey Evening Post in April, 50 Ukrainian crew members on the Commodore Goodwill and the Commodore Clipper earn £28 per day for a 12-hour shift.
They can also work up to seven days a week for three months at a time. In addition to the basic pay, they receive free food and accommodation on the vessels and other benefits.
In contrast to their Ukrainian colleagues, British seafarers typically work two weeks on, two weeks off, according to unions.
Protest leader Darren Procter, from the RMT Union, said that the that the Ukrainian workers were being exploited and that Jersey protests were planned for the ‘very near future’.
