The Island has been given $2 million by the US government – around £1.2m – after freezing the funds in April 2004.

A cheque was handed over to Attorney General Tim Le Cocq yesterday by Matthew Etre of US Homeland Security in recognition of the role that the Island played in cutting off the funding to the unnamed cartel.

In a statement, Mr Etre has praised Jersey’s Law Officer’s department for freezing more than $8 million found in a Jersey-based account at global Spanish bank BBVA in 2004.
