Twelve months ago endurance kayakers John Bouteloup and John Searson pushed their fitness, courage and determination to the limit by conquering the ‘Everest’ of Channel Islands paddling challenges. Today, Mr Bouteloup is attempting to go one better.

He set out at 4.30 this morning in a solo kayak to paddle 105 miles non-stop around the archipelago through some of the most testing tidal waters in the world.

He will spend most of the 20 or so hours he hopes it will take alone, and will have a guard boat only through the shipping lanes around Alderney and on the home leg from Guernsey to St Ouen’s Bay.

Mr Bouteloup will have a GPS SPOT system on his kayak so that anyone can follow his progress live. To do so, log on to http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0z3dBRPMtENuub1fHivv0qR1t1toTk4mD.
