The legionella bacteria was found in the Gwyneth Huelin out-patients wing of the General Hospital and the Queen’s House section of St Saviour’s Hospital during routine monitoring of water supplies.

According to the Health department, a ‘low virulence’ strain of legionella which presents a ‘very low’ risk to patients was found at the out-patients department.

In a statement, the Health department said that the risk of contamination from legionella at the General Hospital was one in a million.
