An email was sent by Jersey Finance on Monday to Brazil, where the Island’s leading tax negotiator, Colin Powell, was due to speak to US Treasury officials about Jersey’s position in relation to new US tax laws.
According to KPMG tax expert John Riva, the email urged Mr Powell to negotiate on the basis that the current arrangements relating to the exchange of information on request are maintained.
Mr Riva told an audience of about 150 financial professionals yesterday that he suspects the new US laws are a step towards automatic exchange of information.
