A town Deputy says that Islanders need answers about the Uplands Homebuy scheme after it emerged that two homes earmarked for discount sales are now for sale at the full first-time buyer rate of £425,000.

Deputy Jackie Hilton, who represents the St Helier No 3 district in which the Uplands development is located, says that she wants answers from Environment Minister Rob Duhamel about why the homes are being sold at first-time buyer rates.

They were initially meant to be sold for £275,000 under a discount scheme to help young families on to the property ladder – despite the fact that some 30 other young families met the criteria, the two homes are now being sold at a higher price, meaning that the developer stands to make another £300,000 on the scheme.

The matter was raised in the States last week, when Deputy Duhamel said that four of the homes had been sold at the original price.
