Deputy Geoff Southern has now apologised for any distress he may have caused after many Islanders expressed outrage at his proposals lodged earlier this month.
He had wanted all free prescriptions – which he said had cost the States £18 million over the past three years – to be stopped and Islanders made to pay for medication.
The money it would save, he said, could be used to make GP visits free for low-income families.
However, he has now amended his proposition to exempt over-65s and anyone with chronic illnesses from prescription charges.
