We should be making cycling a safer pursuit

From Brian Frith.
THE columnist Helier Clement tells us that he’s not anti-cyclist (JEP, 6 February). As this was the same columnist who in August last year described cyclists as ‘louts’ and ‘yobs’ and suggested the motorist adjust his windscreen washers to give them a soaking, excuse me for being a tad cynical.
The columnist goes on to opine on the recent attack on a local cyclist and declares this unacceptable, but concludes that as the cyclist in question cycled on the inside of a line of cars, that it was his fault anyway, so once again gives an excuse and a license for motorists to harass cyclists.
During 2011 there were 16 cyclists killed in London alone, up from ten the previous year. The increase in deaths in the UK overall, was up 12% year on year. When you pit motorist against cyclist there’s a most regrettable and one sided conclusion.
In debating cycling therefore could we maybe have an intelligent debate (maybe look at The Times newspaper initiative as a starter (www.thetimes.co.uk/cyclesafe) rather than be guided by someone whose only claim to cycling knowledge is riding a fixed cogged bike, I presume some five or six decades ago?
Cycling has the capacity to make significant intrusions into the soaring obesity problem we have in the Island and also on our ever more crowded roads. Could we maybe look at practical ways of making it a safer pursuit, rather than promoting ignorance and hatred?
