Although forecasters predict it will not be quite as bad as the Great Storm of 1987, they have said it could ‘come close’.

On that occasion 11 people were injured, roofs were ripped off buildings, dozens of cars were crushed and thousands of trees, walls and fences were blown down.

People are now being warned to prepare themselves for a night of winds of up to a gale force ten with gusts of 70 mph.

The Jersey Met Office has also issued a storm force ten warning for the whole of the Channel Islands and was this morning due to issue a severe weather warning.
