The suggestion comes after the States rejected a proposal put forward by St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft’s to delay a decision of building a new financial district on the existing car park.
Jersey Development Company, which is responsible for developing public land around the Island, wants to create an international finance centre, including offices and a park.
They claim that the project would boost the Island’s building trade, cost the taxpayer nothing and generate £20 million upon its completion.
But Save Our Shoreline, a Jersey environmental group, has expressed concerns that any development of the site would involve excavating tonnes of toxic ash, asbestos and other waste materials.
Dave Cabeldu, the organisation’s co-ordinator, said: ‘The Waterfront is a toxic mess. Underneath the area is toxic ash from the 1970s. Back then it was dumped down on the beach along with other rubbish before being filled in and built on.’
