The gas-powered turbine, which can be fired up at the push of a button, was needed shortly after 8 pm when the under-sea cable link to France went down.

For most people, the loss of electricity lasted no more than a couple of minutes.

However, around 8,000 homes in the west of the Island were without power for up to 13 minutes.

The blackout follows the power cut on Monday night at 7.25 pm, which lasted for up to 45 minutes in Jersey and as long as three hours in Guernsey.

JEC chief executive Chris Ambler admitted this morning that last night’s ‘outage’ was embarrassing and once again apologised for the inconvenience.
