From Alan Holmes.

AS the individual who brought this matter to the attention of the general public (JEP, 1 September) I have watched with increasing awe the rising tide of what can only be described as anger from the many people of this beautiful Island who although from all walks of life have expressed their disgust at the disgraceful treatment of this much loved sculpture known as Decollage.

It goes without saying that as a Jerseyman born and bred I feel very passionate about my Island and as such I take very seriously the many ongoing attempts to destroy that which I hold dear, the sculpture Decollage being one of many (please don’t let me get started on the Waterfront).

As a true Jerseyman I strongly believe in straight talking so here is what I personally feel on this matter. I believe the Airport authorities have long ago relinquished their right to this publicly owned art work, why? Simply because they saw fit to rip it out of its rightful (commissioned) home in the first place.

As much as I would like to see the sculpture returned to the airport I have to say this is most certainly not what should be done if the only place they can suggest is the roundabout. The suggestion that this sculpture be placed on the roundabout is about as stupid a suggestion as one could get and this is why:

– The sculpture needs to be seen up close by people to appreciate its beauty, this will never happen on this busy road.

– It must be set into a fountain to achieve its true meaning, as seen in one of the JEP’s original photos.

– If set in the roundabout it most certainly will not collect the much needed coins for local charity it once collected.

– If set in the roundabout it would simply be a matter of time before some idiot would, through excess speed, simply go straight through it and destroy it for all time.

So what is the solution to this problem? It really is very simple, as some of your more enlightened readers have already suggested (and I fully endorse) the very best place would be outside the parish hall at St Aubin, and these are my reasons, ‘Aubin’ the goose was a much loved character and remembered by many people, there are still geese and ducks there now. It would be in a safe and secure place, easily accessible to all and not too far ‘flight’ wise from its original home.

So come on States of Jersey for once let us long-suffering taxpayers see a small amount of our money put to good use. Simply deduct £9,000 from the airport budget, after all, they caused this problem in the first place and allow simple common sense to take place and put this beautiful sculpture where it will be appreciated.

And to close, just in case the guilty were starting to feel comfortable, I have not forgotten the New Street arch which is my next mountain to climb.
