In what is hoped will be one of the most memorable scenes in recent air display history, Islanders and tourists are being encouraged to don red clothes to show their support for the devastated team.

The RAF aerobatic squad were due to fly into Jersey as an eight-piece this morning – just four days after attending the funeral of their former colleague. And event organisers hope that a sea of red lining St Aubin’s Bay will be a fitting show of support to the team, who have performed in Jersey every year since they were formed in 1965.

Deputy Mike Higgins, one of the display organisers, said: ‘We have had numerous requests from people asking if we could ask spectators to wear red, and we know that spectators at other air shows the Reds have performed at after the crash have worn the colour. I know the pilots can see the crowd when they perform, and if people wore red on the day it would be a nice show of support for the Reds as well as for Jon Egging’s widow and his family. The Reds Arrows have been overwhelmed by the support they have received since the accident, and this would be a fitting gesture to the team.’
