The boat, which underwent thousands of pounds worth of repairs and modifications last year, hit the rocks on Friday afternoon while helping at the annual Brewin Dolphin sailing regatta in St Aubin’s Bay.
The vessel began taking on water but managed to return safely to the port.
A team of divers were sent down to assess the extent of the damage to the boat’s hull and make temporary repairs. None of the four crew members was injured in the incident.
It is not clear how the vessel managed to hit the rock and no further details of the accident have been released.
The tug, which was taken out of service at least twice last year for a £250,000 refit and to undergo repairs to its hydraulic system, was later transferred to Falmouth.
It is believed that the vessel was due to be assessed tomorrow.
A temporary replacement tug, called Goliath, has been brought in from Poole.
