‘I felt my Achilles go before we’d even started,’ he said after the race. ‘It was continuing to hurt me in the swim and I struggled in the run. That was the first run I’ve done in six weeks and I could tell the difference.

‘My time was slower than last year (1 hr 57.52 compared to 1hr 54.58) but I was just pleased to finish the thing. The swim was longer than usual; the bike course was tough and the run was hard, particularly as Nick (Saunders) is a fantastic runner.

The first woman home was Guernsey’s Gail King.
