What are we missing?

From Colin Campbell.
A SERIES of recent comments/decisions perhaps suggest why it is hardly a surprise that the States find trouble in balancing the books as many members – and in particular ministers – obviously did not study mathematics at school.
Following the in-principle decision by the States last year to increase social security charges to higher earners, ministers recently announced that this was to be dropped ‘as the funds were no longer needed so urgently’.
At virtually the same time the Treasury Minister publicly voiced a comment that the States would not be able to achieve the savings previously demanded, in light of the decision not to reduce subsidies to schools.
Most recently we have a claim that the Island ‘needs thousands of new homes’, but in the debate on potential sites last Friday the Environment Minister stated that the Longueville Nursery site ‘was simply not needed for housing’.
Perhaps the ministers would care to explain their reasoning, as obviously we, the tax payers, are missing something.
