The horrific noise has turned our dream into a nightmare

The horrific noise has turned our dream into a nightmare

From Nicola Smith.

WE moved to St Helier from a major UK city three weeks ago to work for the States. My partner and I are absolutely appalled at the sheer volume of traffic and habitual speeding that takes place just feet from our front door.

However, that pales into insignificance compared to the condition and noise of

vehicles on the Island’s roads. The majority of cars and mopeds that roar past our

window at all hours of the night either have blown exhausts or the owners have decided to forgo basic maintenance in order to fund the fitting of illegal ‘big bore’ exhausts.

The noise coming from these vehicles is horrific and back in the UK, the police would issue a Vehicle Defects Rectification Notice giving the owner seven days to fix the vehicle or the vehicle would be banned from use.

Given that there is hardly any crime in Jersey, can someone please explain why the police here seem uninterested in tackling this most invasive of anti-social behaviours? Is the lack of a MOT something to do with it or is it that they are just too busy doing something else?

Jersey relies heavily on tourism and I wonder what tourists visiting the Island must think as they watch these halfwits turn the roads into urban racetracks night after night?

We moved here for a better quality of life and chose Jersey as it offers itself as a quiet, tranquil Island with great way of life. What we have actually got is frayed nerves, sleepless nights and huge disappointment that our ‘dream move’ has turned into a nightmare.

If this is your Island’s idea of a great way of life then I suspect we will be on our way back to the UK before long.

I hope that by discussing this it may galvanise others into speaking up and forcing those in authority to deal with this problem.
