A passer-by alerted both the householder and firefighters to the danger and was later praised by Jersey’s Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters wearing breathing equipment put out the fire, near the Shell Garden, at 1.20 pm yesterday.
The outbuilding, containing appliances including a washing machine, was badly damaged. The main house only suffered minor smoke damage.
