The new Sex Offenders Law came into force on 1 January after the States unanimously agreed to put it into effect on Friday afternoon.

It will create a register of offenders who have been convicted of sex crimes both here and elsewhere to enable the police to keep track of them and for the Royal Court to make orders preventing them from doing anything that might lead to further offending, such as living in a home with children or near a school.

Home Affairs Minister Ian Le Marquand introduced a proposal to enact the law in the States on Friday, saying that it was both important and long-awaited, and that it would cost more than £1 million a year.
