Backstedt, who is in the Island supporting his own team, Team Sprocket, said there were a number of strong teams and exciting individuals going into the first of the Tour’s six race stages tomorrow and Monday’s time trial.

And while he said he would put his money on his own team, which includes Guernsey’s Tobyn Horton, Backstedt has suggested some of the big names Islanders should be looking out for.

One of the favourites has to be Bbox Bouygues Telecom of France, according to Backstedt, because they are the only pro-tour team in the race and therefore the only ones guaranteed to race in this year’s Tour de France.
