Underlining her place as England’s number one Cann, the top seed, beat second seed Helen Davies 23-21, 21-15 in a match that cemented the Islander’s return to the sport after a six month lay off following a car crash last year.

It was an important match for the 30-year-old who was desperate to regain the title she painfully lost in 2009 when she had her own match points but was beaten by Jill Pittard. Now with four titles to her name, following victories in 2005, 2007, and 2008, she is fifth in the all time list of champions.

Cann said: ‘I’m really happy to win. It was a little bit tougher than I thought in the final as I wasn’t playing my best. It wasn’t pretty badminton out there and I had to grind out the win.’
