Although it was breezy along the course yesterday, the runners were relieved that there was no downpour.

The Victor Hugo and Modern Hotels Half Marathon started at FB Fields and took the runners to St Martin, past La Hougue Bie, into Gorey and along the coast road back to FB Fields. A total of £600 was raised for the main charity, the RNLI, while many runners supported other charities of their choice.

Organiser Mary McGrath was delighted to see so many new faces at this year’s run, many of whom were women. She said: ‘We had a lot of new faces taking part this year who had done a leg in the Standard Chartered Marathon and the Durrell Dash and who wanted something that was a step up from that. I was impressed by the young ladies and pleased to see them coming through the ranks.

‘It was a fantastic turn-out. It was great fun and everyone was in good spirits. I think the weather helped – if the weather is dry, everyone tends to be on good form. I thought it was perfect weather for running. There was no rain – that was the main thing – and the sun even came out for a bit.’

The race was won by Guernseyman Steve Dawes in 1 hr 15 min 12 sec, with Jersey’s Jo Gorrod the first lady finisher.
