The No 2 seed for the qualifiers of the Caversham International men’s event, Jean-Noel Insausti from France, was knocked out by wildcard Robin Haase (NED) 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.
Britain’s Joshua Milton, the No 6 seed, also exited in the second round, beaten 6-3, 7-6 (4) by Switzerland’s Roman Valent, while fellow Brit Chris Eaton, the No 3 seed, lost out to Oliver Charroin (FRA) 6-3, 6-4.
Local interest came in the form of Scott Clayton (15) who returned from Millfield School to make his debut in this event.
He was beaten by Britain’s Alexander Slabinsky, ranked 630 in the world, 6-2, 6-2 and said afterwards: ‘It was a hard match but good experience. I’ve now got a taste for this kind of standard and am looking forward to getting back on court for the doubles with Andrew Evans on Tuesday evening.’
