JUNIOR tennis star Scott Clayton will be coached by Björn Borg during an elite sports camp in China next week, rounding off an incredible season for the talented 14-year-old.
Clayton, whose aim is to achieve professional status, won the prestigious Road to Wimbledon championship at the All England Club in August, defeating British national champion Sam Hutt and English seventh-seed Ben Lott in the semi-final and final rounds. He beat Hutt again at the Welsh Indoor championships in September, and was selected to travel to the Commonwealth Youth Games in India earlier this month, where he enjoyed a good run of games against much senior players.
Clayton has since been invited to take part in HSBC’s Sporting Exchanges programme, which aims to give young people the chance to experience sport in a culturally different context. As part of the trip he will receive coaching from tennis legend Borg and play against Chinese junior players, before he makes the step up to international competition, with the forthcoming European Tennis Association tournament in Sweden and a number of International Tennis Federation championships.
Clayton studies at specialist sports college Millfield and is currently searching for sponsorship to enable him to maintain the momentum he has gained so far.
