DEPUTY Deidre Mezbourian was elected as the new Constable of St Lawrence last night with a resounding vote of support from parishioners.
She won a landslide victory over her opponent, Chef de Police Tim Tindall, by securing 1,300 votes to his 382. Clearly moved News of her election as Constable, which was declared at 11.10 pm at the parish hall by returning officer Jurat Peter Morgan, came as a big surprise to Deputy Mezbourian, and she was clearly moved by the support parishioners had given her.
A total of 1,697 voters – 49.4 per cent of the electorate – cast their vote in the parish and there were 15 spoilt papers. Deputy Mezbourian said that she wanted to thank all of the people in St Lawrence who had voted for her.
‘I can’t believe how many people have voted for me and I thank them for having the confidence to support me in this way,’ she said.
The Deputy said that she did not think that any sitting States Member had the automatic right to expect to be elected to another role in the House. ‘I knew it was necessary to undertake a campaign and my husband David, daughter Amber and I, as well as my supporters, went to see as many parishioners as we could,’ she said.
Asked what her priorities would be when sworn in as Constable, Deputy Mezbourian said that she intended to take things very slowly and learn as much as she could from the parish team whom she was looking forward to working with.
