PEOPLE who use legal highs are taking huge risks with their health, the director of Jersey’s Alcohol and Drugs Service has warned.

Michael Gafoor said that users of herbal highs were exposing themselves to very real danger by using substances of unknown purity and effects.

He is working closely with the Island’s Health department, which wants to see legal highs — including the cannabis substitute Spice — banned in Jersey.

Mr Gafoor said that Spice was not sold in the USA, Australia, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Norway or Austria; nor even in the Netherlands, which has now legalised cannabis. ‘There are a range of measures being looked at to restrict the availability of legal highs and to increase awareness among young people of the possible side-effects in order for them to make more informed decisions if they are going to take risks with their health,’ he said.
