THE Waterfront Enterprise Board has secretly investigated potential reclamation sites in marine protected zones, according to an Island environmentalist.

Save Our Shoreline member David Cabeldu has grave concerns about plans drawn up by consultants Scott Wilson, commissioned by WEB, to locate potential development sites.

He said that three of the five potential reclamation sites fall within the south-east coast Ramsar wetland area, and all of the proposed areas are in the Marine Protection Zone (MPZ) — a policy against development in marine environments advocated by Save Our Shoreline and adopted by the States in 1995.

Mr Cabeldu was a member of the original steering group which fought to get Ramsar status in 2001 and cannot understand why WEB would be wasting time and money looking into sites that should not be developed. He is also worried that Planning know nothing about the plans — and when he tried to get further details from WEB he was blocked.
