SOME workers at a ground handling company at the Airport are waiting anxiously to find out if they will have a job this winter.
Airline Services CI, which handles British Airways among others, has written to staff saying that it may be forced to reduce the number of people it employs during the winter months.
The company is believed to have given notice that it could cut the overall number of jobs depending on the number of flights airlines decide to operate from mid-October.
Many airlines are still putting the final touches to winter schedules. However, they face soaring fuel prices and credit is difficult to come by – factors that could tempt some to cut flight numbers and the size of aircraft.
BA has already started flying larger Airbus A319 planes on the Jersey to Gatwick route but is likely to cut back the frequency of services this winter.
Bmi is also likely to operate the smaller 50-seat Embraer 145 jet on its Heathrow route to replace the 150-seat Airbus A320.
