ALMOST 50 people have been left homeless after a fire and series of explosions destroyed their lodging house.

Homeless residents took refuge in St Peter’s Parish Hall and spoke of their fear as they ran for their lives from the Broadlands’ blaze.

Barefoot babies and children in pyjamas stood among tearful and shocked parents in the hall, which was used as a haven for those who had lost everything in the fire on Mont Fallu.

A total of 46 shocked residents gathered with around 100 family and friends trying to come to terms with their loss.

Honorary police, people living nearby and local businesses rallied round to provide support, hot food, medication, nappies, bottles and blankets for the homeless residents, who were mainly Portuguese and Polish nationals, while others opened up their homes for the night to accommodate the visibly shaken residents.
