A RECORD crowd of over 15,000 enjoyed all the fun of the Jersey Evening Post West Show at St Peter over the weekend.
The wide range of entertainment coupled with weather that was not quite hot enough to go to the beach meant that the country fair was very busy on both Saturday and Sunday.
It was the tenth anniversary of the event, which was opened on Saturday morning by the Lieutenant Governer, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway, and his wife Valerie, and the biggest yet.
It is held every two years in fields owned by farmer Darren Quénault. Organising committee chairman Andrew Le Brun said that he hoped it would be back again in two years’ time as a result of its success of this year.
In the two show rings, the emphasis this year was on animal attractions and the headline act was the spectacular equestrian stunt show Rockin’ Horse, whose acrobatic displays of riding Cossack style had crowds gasping in awe.
The Rockwood dog display team were also very popular with the large crowds. The dog handlers put their charges through disciplines that showed off the agility and obedience of their canine companions.
The donkey derby ran and ran with seven races on each day, the BSJA organised show jumping competitions and Pony Club riders also showed off their skills with mounted games.
Other attractions included a cattle show; demonstrations of horse shoeing by farrier Tom Marett; displays of classic vehicles; magic shows in the children’s marquee; a tug of war competition as well as performances of other diverse skills ranging from Kenpo karate to cheerleading.
There was music from a variety of local performers on the stage while other performers wandered around the showground to keep the crowds entertained.nextpage
