THE Jersey Seniors Classic teed off this morning at La Moye Golf Club.
Having played the course yesterday during the Pro-Am event, Ryder Cup winning captain, Sam Torrance, was said to be happy with his round on a course he ‘loves’.
He will be looking for his third win in Jersey, having gained success here on the European Tour in 1991 and in the Seniors Classic in 2005 but is still hampered by a wrist injury.
He didn’t have the best start this morning, bogeying the second and third holes and double bogeying the fourth, to be +4 after six holes.
European Seniors Tour debutantes, Peter Mitchell and Ian Palmer, also looked strong yesterday. The latter is hoping to gain his second win in the Island after victory on the main tour here in 1993.
Englishman, Mitchell, got off to a good start today and was one under after four holes – Zimbabwe’s Tony Johnstone leading the way on -2 after six holes. Australia’s David Good led at one uder after nine holes.
Tony Smith, Paul Lavender and Nick Le Couteur shared the top spot after the first round of the Pro-Am as they all finished on -10. Two more days play are scheduled in this event which pairs an amateur with a different professional every day.
