MEMBERS of the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee could be visiting Jersey next month.

As reported previously an inquiry into offshore financial centres has been launched by the committee, as part of an overall investigation into the sub-prime mortgage crisis and its effect on Northern Rock. The States of Jersey and Jersey Finance are likely to make submissions and could be called to give evidence at a public hearing.

Martin de Forest Brown, director of international finance at the Chief Minister’s office, said: ‘We have heard that they want to visit the Island, which I think they have done in the past. They seem to like to come here.’

He said that Colin Powell, adviser to the States of Jersey on international affairs, would probably make a submission to the Treasury inquiry and attend any hearing.
