The conference sessions spoke to ongoing triumphs over adversity! We rejoiced over the amazing progress and growth the Jersey breed and dairy industry have known in the healing country of Rwanda. Jersey has been such a part of buliding infrastructure and transferring technology to this tiny African land. Our WJCB sister organization Jersey South Africa has been involved in selection and shipping of live animals whilst Jersey has fielded trainers and genetic material in the form of frozen semen.

Don Sherman of California captivated the large audience with tales of the growth since mid-1980s of Hilmar cheese, the brain-child of a dozen Jersey-owning families which has grown from a “nice start-up to end up being the largest single site cheese factory in the world!

Now, the Hilmar folks have forged ahead with a massive new second cheese plant in Dalhart, Texas! Three generations of Jersey owners now push onward in this growing business!

Stephen Bland of northern England provoked not a few misty eyes when he described the devastating moment he and his wife Clare and their family had known their former dairy herd had been removed during the UK foot and mouth crisis of early 2001. However, this story has had a very happy ongoing life! The family coverted to a full Jersey herd after FMD and are now doing a roaring and ongoing business on-farm processing and marketing their Abbott Lodge premium Jersey ice creams and more!

There is more to be said about Tuesday’s “goings on”; however we are now going on to an early morning WJCB council meeting! More as soon as possible!

We’ll Jersey on, on Jersey!

Ever prattlling, Russell of Canada
