MOVING from badminton to the boxing ring is not a well-worn path, but Leonis middleweight Tommy Noel must be well pleased with his decision to put down racquet and don gloves.

Noel, still a teenager, captained an injury and absence-hit Leonis side for the first time at Hotel L’Horizon on Saturday night and came away with two personal awards after a rollicking top-of-the-bill battle with City of Liverpool counterpart Paul Lovett.

Although Lovett collected the Minerva Team Trophy after Liverpool, the holders, gained a 4-4 draw on the night, Noel won the Alexander Burnett Boxer of the Night award for his majority points win, as well as sharing The Gary Bellot Bout of the Night honours with Lovett.

The captains’ clash provided a superb end to the current Jersey Dinner Boxing Club season, and, in difficult circumstances, gave a real indication of the talent available to Leonis, who put on a great show alongside the formidable Liverpool Select.
