According to their latest figures the Island’s borders are being under-manned and any future sex offenders’ register will be impossible to police because of staff shortages.

Police chief Graham Power said: ‘The combination of the resource impact of the historic child abuse inquiry and staff vacancies, means that operational police strength for response and reassurance policing has been below optimum levels in the first quarter of 2008.’

In their report for the first quarter of the year, figures reveal that the total number of police checks on passengers passing through the Harbour and the Airport has dropped significantly by almost 40 per cent.
