The law ends feudalism in the island, removing the reserved seats for landowners in the Chief Pleas, the island’s government, and meaning the next chamber will comprise only elected deputies.

Lieutenant Colonel Reg Guille, who is Seneschal for the Island, said that the majority of residents of Sark were delighted with the news.

Speaking to the JEP this morning, Mr Guille said: ‘The majority of the population of this island are delighted that Royal Assent has at long last been granted to our reform law.
