Town Constable Simon Crowcroft put his name to the document at a special ceremony in the Madeiran capital on Saturday.

The agreement will be fully ratified when the mayor of Funchal, Miguel Albuquerque, returns to Jersey to sign the document here ?possibly as early as next month. Mr Crowcroft said that the twinning would strengthen existing links between the two communities, with cultural and educational exchanges and the sharing of business expertise.

A 14-strong Jersey choir set off for Madeira this morning to sing as guests of their government. The Musical Originals choir, led by teacher Imogen Nicholls, and made up of girls aged between 12 and 17, will undertake a busy musical and cultural programme.
