An inquest yesterday found that Alvaro Luis da Silva Neves (62) was twice over the drink-drive limit while at the helm of Blue Lady, a cabin cruiser, when he died.

Despite three Guernsey marine officers expressing concerns about Mr Neves and his friend and skipper Julio de Freitas being drunk on board, they were allowed to sail back to Jersey.

The inquest heard that on the morning of 11 August last year the friends decided to travel to Guernsey for the day. Mr de Freitas said they both consumed one Bacardi and Coke, a bottle of red wine, one bottle of beer and a brandy.
