Environment Minister Freddie Cohen said that he will reduce the retail and restaurant capacity on the 15-block development to around 27,000 sq ft each – or around twice the size of the Safeway shop floor in Vallée des Vaux.

Criticism

And he said that he will make sure that Jersey architects are employed to design some of the buildings following criticism from the Association of Jersey Architects.

The size of the development had drawn criticism from businesses, particularly the Chamber of Commerce, who said that it could turn the rest of St Helier into a ‘ghost town’.

But Senator Cohen said that he has listened to the consultation responses on the Hopkins Masterplan – which covers the Esplanade Square development – and will cut back the provision for shops and restaurants.
