Angry parishioners criticised the scale of the proposed development, which would involve more than 250 homes and a 75-bed care home spread over three fields.
Residents also raised their concerns about traffic problems and increased urbanisation of the parish if the development – part of a ministerial drive for more than 450 homes in eight parishes – was allowed to go ahead.
But other residents were supportive of the plans, which would involve dozens of houses for the elderly given to the parish free of charge, particularly after an impassioned speech by St Saviour Constable Peter Hanning. He urged residents to consider the moral responsibility that the parish has towards its elderly and stressed that the scheme was a ‘one-off opportunity’ for St Saviour.
