Jersey’s data protection commissioner, Emma Martins, is warning businesses to ensure that people’s private data is kept safe.
This month Mrs Martins received a phone call from a local company who send secret details through an insecure internet e-mail site.
‘It is quite a common occurrence, apparently. Every year this one organisation, who I cannot name, sends out a lot of personal information about individuals including financial and local details through an open e-mail system. It is not a private e-mail system. It is the equivalent of Jerseymail or Google mail. They were questioning if they should review their processes. Clearly the answer is yes. There is no way that information should have been sent over an insecure network.’
