The world ‘feis’ of Irish dancing is being planned by the Cannon-O’Rafferty School of Irish Dance Jersey. They are hoping to invite schools from as far away as the United States, Slovakia and the UK as well as from Guernsey.
Katie O’Rafferty, who runs the Irish dancing school, is meeting Tourism and Education next month to discuss how she can get some financial help for the event.
A feis is a festival of Irish dance, music and culture. The word is Irish Gaelic and is pronounced fesh.
Mrs O’Rafferty said: ‘Our dancers are of a very high standard and have been travelling for the last eight years, which is a huge expense for everyone. Once they have been to a feis their dancing improves by a hundred per cent. Having one here would mean that those who can’t afford to travel will be able to compete in a world-class event. I have been going to these for years, so I suppose it is my turn to hold one!’
