Warning over new States database

Emma Martins is concerned about the proposed registration cards, which could hold Islanders’ residential status as well as their names and social security numbers.

Mrs Martins said that the announcement is not particularly good timing as it comes while the UK government are still under attack for losing millions of people’s personal data, on two discs, through the post. This week she was attending a two-day conference with the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office.

A number of data protection officers and agencies met to discuss and consider the impact on an individual’s privacy before organisations develop new IT systems or change the way they handle information.
