Stay away from wife, would-be Constable told

Darius Pearce appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday after being charged with an assault on Catherine Pearce.

The offence allegedly took place at the marital home in Queen’s Avenue between 10 pm on Wednesday and 2 am on Thursday.

On Tuesday night, a little over 24 hours earlier, Pearce appeared at the nomination meeting at the Town Hall to register formally his intention to stand for Constable in January.

Pearce, a member of both the UK and Jersey Conservative parties, is standing as an independent candidate on a conservative platform.

At yesterday’s hearing, Pearce reserved his plea to the charge so that he could seek legal advice.

Releasing him on conditional bail, the Magistrate, Ian Le Marquand, told the 35-year-old accused that he must not visit the marital home or make any attempt to contact his wife.

The case was adjourned until Friday next week, when the bail conditions can be reviewed.

As well as imposing those conditions on Pearce, Mr Le Marquand asked the prosecution to make it clear that the alleged victim should not try to contact her husband.
