Playing at the 147 Club on Monday, in Channel Blind Company Division I, a softly struck red ball bounced out of a middle pocket ending a break of 88 comprising sunk eleven reds and eleven blacks.

Canavan, a car valeter who comes from Durham, said: ‘It’s just one of those things and you can’t let it do your head in or you’ll never pot another ball!

‘Everyone was amazed when the red came back out and a close look at the pocket revealed that it had not been put back correctly after maintenance work done on the table earlier in the day.

‘It was obvious when the ball came back out because there was a piece of wood sticking out at the back of the pocket.

‘Nobody noticed it before we started playing and during the break I had not put any balls into that pocket.

It’s really frustrating but one of those things.’

Canavan is in fine form this season having now scored the top three breaks in the league – 113, 88 and 79.

The 32-year-old added: ‘Since returning from the Home Internationals at Prestatyn I’m practising more.

The tables in Wales were very tight and I’ve been working hard on my game playing on a couple of the tight tables at the Mechanics’ Institute.’

Canavan’s team beat Mechanics B 9-0 on Monday evening and he was close to losing the only frame in the match against Joe Stewart but he won it in the end after clearing up from the yellow.

Colleague Gary Britton, who has won all 15 frames he has played, defeated Miguel De Freitas aided by breaks of 68, 64 and 57 while Matt Cox had a 31 break in his defeat by Dave Snell.

Second-placed 147 A beat Mechanics A 6-3 with Karl Le F’vre beating Mick Mahrer 3-0, Steve Thomas (43 break) beating Rob Newton (44) 2-1.

Guy Heys won 2-1 against Chris Alexander.
