The project was funded with money left to Health and Social Services by the late Vera Hutter. Mrs Hutter’s nieces opened the new unit yesterday, which will be called The Le Dain-Hutter Eye Department in accordance with her wishes as it includes both her maiden and married names. Health chief executive Mike Pollard said the project was a response to overcrowding identified in 2001 in the old eye, ENT and audiology department. ‘Since then a number of solutions have been looked at, but in 2003 the opportunity arose to relocate Belcroute Ward to Orchard House on the St Saviour’s Hospital site,’ he explained. ‘That project was completed in late 2005 and premises were then made available to relocate the Eyes and Audiology Department.’ The new department is three times the size of the old one and is expected to accommodate the growth expected in this area over the next 20 years.
