He says that Simon Crowcroft’s proposal to hold off on the 3% sales tax until the public back it in an Islandwide referendum is an attempt to curry favour with the electorate before his term as Constable expires in December. The Constable, however, has dismissed the criticism, saying he is happy to stand on his record over the last five years and that he does not need a GST referendum proposition to get re-elected. ‘He has an eye on his next election and he is just playing politics,’ said Senator Walker. ‘It is just plain irresponsible – populist, no doubt, but irresponsible. ‘No referendum can clearly spell out to the public the detail of the alternatives, nor the consequences of not introducing it and not restructuring our fiscal policies.’
